I’m starting to wonder if K-Def (@djkdef) ever sleeps. New rapid-fire breakbeat mix coming soon (on vinyl). There’s a lot of stuff you prob never heard on here.

Records stores are a dying breed but this one was special because it technically never existed.

“HPRS” was essentially an invite-only / word of mouth, New Jersey vinyl speakeasy. The founder, Gregorious, opened its doors once every month or so to a welcoming cast of music junkies including some familiar (to you) names like Damu the Fudgemunk and Young Guru, but mainly, to an awesome and unique cast of regulars (more on that later).

When you got an email from founder Greg about an HPRS opening, you made plans to attend. And if you couldn’t make it, you definitely felt like you we’re missing out. Because you were missing out… Not only on great records at below market value prices, but much more.

Originally located in a Highland Park NJ garage, in 2011(ish) it was relocated to actual retail location complete with a parking lot and lounge. Despite the move to a new town, the “HP” moniker remained. The new location was at first planned to be a short stay of 3 months … however; things changed, and ‘3 months’ somehow stretched to a period of about 2.5 years, thankfully (best landlord ever).

Besides records, HPRS, was a community. There was always something worthwhile waiting just behind it’s red & white striped awnings and blacked out windows. We drank beers and ate good food in there (Dosa Express ftw). Damu performed some of his upcoming Spur Momento project live on his MPC on one occasion. You learned about art and people in there as ideas and stories were continuously exchanged.

The characters that passed through its doors were as diverse as the records on its shelves. On my first visit I remember encountering an OG that was affectionately nicknamed ‘Mr Capitol,’ because, as you may have guessed, he was always looking for vinyl released by his favorite label, Capitol Records. Guys like Mr Capitol made up the DNA of HPRS.

For better or worse, Greg closed its doors for the last time this past Sunday (the building is being sold).

I’m thankful for the time spent at HPRS for the people it allowed us to meet.

Still going. Didn’t realize Damu was fearless to point he’d casually scale 20 ft+ rock walls and jump over rivers. In sneakers.
